INTRODUCTION
An anecdote has endured for nearly three decades concerning the muscles that adorned the physique of the late martial artist, actor, and philosopher Bruce Lee. It concerns a lady by the name of Ann Clouse, the wife of Robert Clouse, who was the director of Lee's last film, Enter the Dragon, for Warner Bros. It seems that Mrs. Clouse had ventured onto the set of the film and was absolutely mesmerized by Lee's incredible muscularity as she watched him, stripped to the waist and perspiring heav, ily in the hot and humid Hong Kong climate, immersed in choreographing the film's fighting sequences. When Lee took a brief respite, she ven, tured over to the young superstar and asked if she could "feel his biceps." "Sure," Lee replied, responding to a request he'd received on numerous occasions. He tensed his arm and invited he~ to check it out. "My God!" she exclaimed, drawing her hand back instantly. "It's like feeling warm marble!" It's fascinating that more than a quarter of a century has elapsed since Bruce Lee's passing in July 1973 from a cerebral edema, yet people are still talking about the physique of a man who stood but five feet, seven, and,a,half inches tall and weighed, on a good day, around 135 pounds. I say "fascinating" only in relation to the context of our Western culture, where our standard for a great physique has typically been some steroid, bloated linebacker who stands well over six feet and weighs in at nearly 300 pounds. Even more fascinating is the fact that almost everyone con, tinues to derive something different from their encounters with Bruce Lee, whether in person or through the mediums of film, print, and video. Martial artists continue to revere his physical dexterity, power, and speed, as well as the genius he displayed in bringing science to bear on the world of unarmed combat; moviegoers are impressed with the man's animal magnetism and the fact that he single, handedly created a new genre of action film, opening the door for the Sylvester Stallones and Arnold Schwarzeneggers who followed in his footsteps. Philosophers are impressed with Lee's ability to have bridged the philosophical chasm that separated East and West, and to have effectively synthesized what many had considered to be two irreconcilable metaphysical viewpoints.

INTRODUCTION
Does Your Brain Need Beefing Up? The human brain is one of the most complex organisms known. When working at optimum levels, it can process loads of data as quickly as a computer. Although a computer’s hard drive can ultimately store much more data, our brains can store “data” in ways that a computer never could— instantly recalling how crème brûlée smells, feels, and tastes when this dessert is mentioned. Unfortunately the brain doesn’t always remain working at optimum levels . . . unless you work on it! More and more, scientific evidence is proving that our minds don’t have to deteriorate as they age. There are preventive measures we can take that will significantly increase the probability of staying mentally and physically fit throughout our lives. This is good news of course, because mental fitness and agility translate to an enhanced quality of life. Physical exercise, good nutrition, social connection with others, and mental stimulation all play important roles in ensuring that our brains remain sharp and agile at any age. Scientists the world over have been doing research for decades on how some people can stay “with it” while others cannot. The Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, demonstrated recently that older adults could improve their cognitive abilities with proper training and that some of these gains could be maintained several years later. In this experiment conducted by a number of researchers, more than 2,800 adults aged 65 to 94 received training in memory, reasoning, or processing speed. After about ten hours of training, each group improved significantly in the area in which they were trained. Even five years later subjects maintained many of their improvements. Research on the physical results of thinking hard—as one is bound to do when solving a puzzle—has shown that just using the brain actually expands the links that interconnect brain cells. The more we think, the better our brains function . . .
regardless of age. The renowned brain researcher Dr. Marian Diamond says,

This book does not go into the theory behind any of the sensors shown, nor does it go into any of the theory behind the electronic and optoelectronic parts required to build any of the circuits shown. It is basically just a library of different kinds of alarm circuits complete with theory of operation and parts list for each circuit. The reader should therefore already be familiar with the basic techniques of designing circuits that include discrete electronic parts such as LED's and BJT's. It is a useful book of ideas if you are looking for a complete description of an alarm circuit that you can use for a larger circuit you are building. I cannot vouch for the overall accuracy of the book's circuits, but I have built about five of the circuits included in this book over the last two years, and they all worked OK without modification. The book is unique in that it shows you detailed circuit diagrams and parts lists for detecting humidity, earth movement, twilight, smoke, and fluids. It is relatively short at under 300 pages, but at its low price I consider it a bargain if you think you will ever be faced with designing any kind of alarm circuit. If you want to get more into the theory of the sensors that are showcased here, might I recommend Jacob Fraden's "Handbook of Modern Sensors", since it is heavy on theory and lighter on circuitry, making it the perfect companion for this book.

Why HomeMadePowerPlant?
There is one disturbing fact that people are slowly beginning to realize. We can't depend on fossil fuels for our energy forever.
Oil prices are skyrocketing around the world. People are fighting and dying over oil reserves. The damage to our planet and our climate is irreversible and is becoming more and more apparent by the day.
Put shortly, chances are that if we don't do something about our energy situation now, our kids and their kids are going to have to face some extremely difficult challenges in the future.
But what can we do? It seems that most alternative energy choices are too expensive to mass market. As an individual, is there really anything you can do to make a difference?
We're going to answer those questions and a whole lot more throughout this book. We'll look at some of things you can start doing right now, today, to do your part in solving the world's energy crisis.
Today is the day for change. This is your action plan for change. In this book you will not find dry, boring scientific claims that global warming and climate change will be the end of us all.In this book you will find interesting and easy to follow plans to build your own homemade solar panels, find free or inexpensive solar panels, and find free batteries too. Many problems plague the modern World right now- whether your concern is pollution, rising gas and oil prices in the future, or you fear blackouts and higher energy costs in the future. The solution to our everyday energy and lifestyle problems really lies in our own backyard. The actions we take and the decisions we make everyday can affect change. How do I know this? No, I don’t have a fancy science degree from a famous university, and I don’t support fancy name brand societies that line their own pockets in the name of marketing ‘Green’ choices.
My family has simply made the choice to implement a lifestyle that would no longer contribute to global warming and climate change. The truth is that we have been doing this for 21 years and we see it working.
That’s the important part in all of this. We all have to take personal responsibility for our own part in global warming or there will be no change. Back in the 1960’s when I grew up I thought we could keep consuming the Earth’s resources without any consequences.

INTRODUCTION
Should anyone buy, convert, or build an electric motorcycle today? They can go as fast as 168 miles per hour! They are clean, efficient, and cost-effective. Plus, they haul! Electric motorcycles are virtually maintenance-free: They never require oil changes, new spark plugs, or any other regular repairs. You see, electric vehicles (EVs) were designed to do whatever was needed in the past and can be designed and refined to do whatever is needed in the future. What do you need an EV to be: big, small, powerful, fast, ultraefficient? Design to meet that need. Bill Dube did it with his electric motorcycle; why can’t you? Also, think about some of the facts and statistics from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and various notable sources: The DOE states that more than half the oil we use every day is imported. This level of dependence on imports (55 percent) is the highest in our history. The DOE even goes on to say that this dependence on foreign oil will increase as we use up domestic resources. Also, as a
national security issue, we all should be concerned that the vast majority of the world’s oil reserves are concentrated in the Middle East (65–75 percent) and controlled by the members of the OPEC oil cartel. Further, the DOE goes on to state that 133 million Americans live in areas that failed at least one National Ambient Air Quality Standard. Transportation motorcycles produce 25–75 percent of key chemicals that pollute the air, causing smog and health problems. All new motorcycles must meet federal emissions standards.
As motorcycles get older, however, the amount of pollution they produce increases. Here are some reasons why:
1. Although they are only at a relatively embryonic stage in terms of market penetration, electric motorcycles represent the most environmentally viable option because there are no emissions. The energy generated to power an EV and to move a motorcycle is 97 percent cleaner in terms of noxious pollutants.
2. Another advantage of electric motors is their ability to provide power at almost any engine speed. Whereas only about 20 percent of the chemical energy in gasoline gets converted into useful work at the wheels of an internal combustion motorcycle, 75 percent or more of the energy from a battery reaches the wheels of an EV.
3. One of the big arguments made by automobile companies against EVs is that they are powered by power plants, which are powered primarily by coal. Less than 2 percent of U.S. electricity is generated from oil, so using electricity as a transportation fuel would greatly reduce dependence on imported petroleum.
4. Even assuming that the electricity to power an EV is not produced from rooftop solar or natural gas (let’s assume it comes 100 percent from coal), it is still much cleaner than gasoline produced from petroleum.
5. In addition, power plants are stationary sources that can be modified over time to become cleaner.1

INTRODUCTION
Wireless networking has witnessed a tremendous growth in recent years. Wireless networks offer attractive flexibility and coverage to network operators and users. Ubiquitous network coverage, for local and wide areas, can be provided without the cost of deploying and maintaining wired-based infrastructures. The current wireless networks are based on the concept of (radio) cells, which divide a telephone service zone into small areas for efficient use of low-power transmitters with minimum interference. The terminal devices are generally unintelligent terminals, meaning that the call management, routing, and other services are handled in the network. The terminals can move from one area to another, requiring their calls to remain uninterrupted during mobility. A simplified architecture of the wireless network is depicted in Figure 1.1. When a mobile terminal is turned on, it locates a nearby cell, which tells it what radio channels and what transmission power to use. As the terminal moves, it will repeat this process as it enters new cells. The mobile terminals identify themselves to the network using a unique identifier (ID), having two components that we denote, temporarily, by the electronic serial number (ESN) and the mobile identification number (MIN). While the first component physically identifies the terminal, the second identifies the terminal holder. The second component is actually the telephone number. The ESN and MIN are continuously validated by the network. A common attack on the communication systems, to obtain fraudulent services, is called cloning attack, in which the ESN and MIN are duplicated in another terminal and submitted to the system by the other terminal. To perform its tasks, a mobile communication system implements several fundamental functions, including call management, call billing, call routing, data communication, and data protection. For billing needs, the mobile communication system handling the communication connection is responsible for sending to the communication’s service provider a billing record, translating the raw connection details, according to rates and plans, into particular charges (for the MIN holder). The signal carriers, involved in the connection establishment, set up accounts with each other for the services provided on the other networks. End users typically pay a combination of monthly service charges and per-minute charges, although prepaid plans with only per-minute charges are becoming more popular.
The various wireless network technologies, currently used to support mobile communication systems, have very different approaches to provide security. For example, one can notice that (a) the early analog cell phones have essentially no security capabilities; (b) the North American Digital Standards have voice privacy using an encryption that is commonly known as presenting various weaknesses; and (c) the European GSM standards support voice encryption, but the GSM networks are subject to a large range of straightforward attacks (as it will be shown in the subsequent chapters).

Introduction
IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology, which merges the Internet with interactive telecommunications, represents the here and now for today’s packet-switched networks. Consequently, anyone working with or around these converging fields needs to possess a fundamental understanding of IMS and how this technology is poised to change the way new applications are designed and deployed.
IMS: A New Model for Blending Applications goes beyond most references in this field. Rather than offer the usual explanation of the standard itself, the authors address how IMS-based services might be deployed in an operator’s network. Leveraging the inside knowledge gained from years of working at the forefront of IMS research, the authors delineate the application layers and the applications that can be implemented using an IMS network. For those unfamiliar with IMS, they provide an overview of its key components and the signaling standards used for the implementation of an end-to-end IMS service.
Significant concepts are conveyed through real-life vignettes that describe how end users might actually use interactive IMS applications in the course of their day. This approach mimics the way an operator’s marketing organization might go about building a business case for IMS application deployment. While technical enough to meet the needs of engineers, this approach will greatly assist marketing, sales, and managerial professionals with gaining a basic understanding of IMS, as well as a sense of the numerous applications driving the field forward.

The Omnivores Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
464 pages | English | ISBN-10: 1594200823 | PDF | 19.3 MB
INTRODUCTION
Most us at great distance from our food. I don't mean that we live "twelve miles from lemon," English wit Sydney Smith said about home Yorkshire. I mean that our food bears little resemblance its natural substance. Hamburger never mooed; spaghetti grows on pasta tree; baby carrots come from pink blue nursery. Still, we worry about our meals -- from calories carbs, from heart-healthy brain food. And we prefer our food be "natural," long natural doesn't involve real.
In The Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan writes about how our food grown -- what it is, fact, that we eating. The book really three one: The first section discusses industrial farming; second, organic food, both big business on relatively small farm; and third, what it like hunt gather food oneself. And each section culminates in meal -- cheeseburger fries from McDonald's; roast chicken, vegetables and salad from Whole Foods; grilled chicken, corn and chocolate soufflé (made fresh eggs) from sustainable farm; and, finally, mushrooms pork, foraged from wild.
The first section is wake-up call anyone who has ever been hungry. In United States, Pollan makes clear, we're mostly fed by two things: corn oil. We may not sit down bowls yummy petroleum, but almost everything we eat has used enormous amounts fossil fuels get our tables. Oil products part of fertilizers that feed plants, pesticides that keep insects away from m, fuels used by trains trucks that transport m across country, and packaging which y're wrapped. We're addicted oil, we really like eat.
Oil underlines Pollan's story about agribusiness, but corn its focus. American cattle fatten corn. Corn also feeds poultry, pigs sheep, even farmed fish. But that's just beginning. In addition dairy products from corn-fed cows eggs from corn-fed chickens, corn starch, corn oil corn syrup make up key ingredients prepared foods. High-fructose corn syrup sweetens everything from juice toothpaste. Even alcohol beer corn-based. Corn is everything from frozen yogurt ketchup, from mayonnaise mustard hot dogs bologna, from salad dressings vitamin pills. "Tell me what you eat," said French gastronomist Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, "and I will tell you what you are." We're corn.
Each bushel industrial corn grown, Pollan notes, uses equivalent up to third a gallon oil. Some of oil products evaporate acidify rain; some seep into water table; some wash into rivers, affecting drinking water poisoning marine ecosystems. The industrial logic also means vast farms that grow only corn. When price corn drops, solution, farmer hopes, is plant more corn next year. The paradoxical result? While farmers earn less, re's an over-supply cheap corn, that means finding ever more ways use it up.
Is eating all this corn good us? Who knows? We think we've tamed nature, but we're just beginning learn about all that we don't yet know. Ships were once provided plenty food, but sailors got scurvy because y needed vitamin C. We're sailing on same sea, thinking we're eating well but still discovering nutrients our food that we hadn't known were re -- that we don't yet know we need.
We've lost touch with natural loops farming, which livestock crops connected mutually beneficial circles. Pollan discusses alternatives industrial farming, but se two long (and occasionally self-indulgent) sections lack focus intensity -- anger beneath surface -- of first. He spends week at Joel Salatin's Polyface Farm in Shenandoah Valley, farm that works nature, rather than despite it. Salatin calls himself grass farmer, though his farm produces cows, chickens, eggs corn. But everything begins with grass: The cows nibble at it at precise moment when it's at its sweetest are moved from pasture pasture keep grass at its best height. Their droppings fertilize grass, and cycle under way. There's kind lyrical symmetry everything that happens this farm. Even final slaughtering chickens done quickly humanely, in open air. It isn't pleasant, but compared to way cattle fattened slaughtered meat industry feedlots slaughterhouses, it remarkably reasonable.
We needn't learn how shoot our own pigs, Pollan does; re's hope other ways -- farmers' markets, Slow Food movement, restaurants supplied by local farms. To Pollan, omnivore's dilemma twofold: what we choose eat ("What should we have dinner?" he asks in opening sentence his book) how we let that food be produced. His book an eater's manifesto, he touches on vast array subjects, from food fads taboos our avoidance not only our food's animality, but also our own. Along way, he alert his own emotions thoughts, see how y affect what he does what he eats, learn more and explain what he knows. His approach steeped honesty self-awareness. His cause just, his thinking clear, his writing compelling.
Be careful your dinner!
